Viable Alternatives for Treating Scars and Marks

Hormonal changes occurring inside the body during puberty, pregnancy, or muscle building cause irreparable damage to the connective protein fibers present beneath the skin surface, thereby resulting in the formation of stretch marks or striae. Unfortunately, there is no treatment option available that can get rid of stretch marks completely.

Secondly, options and remedies for stretch marks treatment differ from individual to individual depending on the skin type, existing medications, and the formation stage of the stretch marks. Explained in this article are five important stretch mark removal remedies.
  • Laser treatment – Inarguably, this is the most expensive and stressful stretch marks removal method requiring more than six to eight sessions to gain the desired results. In this, monochromatic optic laser beams are directed through the skin pores into the affected area, thereby stimulating cell growth and formation of new dermis tissue.
  • Application of topical anti-stretch marks creams – Prescription lotions and creams are considered the most economical and effective stretch marks treatment option. These topical creams primarily contain ingredients that can improve the elasticity of the skin, reduce inflammation, rejuvenate the damaged tissue, stimulate cellular growth, and moisturize the skin, thereby making it appear soft, supple, and healthy. Some of these ingredients include collagen, elastin hydrolysates, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, emu oil, vitamin A, E and C, cocoa butter and Shea butter. Such creams and lotions need to be used regularly (from second trimester) for best results.
  • Massage therapy – This is another effective and inexpensive stretch marks treatment option.  With regular massage on the affected area using aloe vera gel, olive oil, or emu oil, one can improve the blood circulation and stimulate the growth of new keratinocytes. Massage therapy is also useful in stimulating fibroblasts to secrete elastin and collagen fibers.
  • Endermologie – Introduced in France during the early 21st century, this method utilizes specially designed and manufactured dermal rollers for treating stretch marks. These dermal rollers produce a suctioning action through which skin is massaged, thus improving blood circulation and toxin removal.
  • Microdermabrasion – Developed in Italy during 1985, this is one of the most popularly used stretch marks treatment option, particularly for improving superficial skin color and texture. In this method, tiny crystals of sand are rubbed to remove the upper layers of the skin. Unfortunately, stretch marks are formed when the underlying dermis skin tissue is damaged. In this method, dermis tissue is not repaired. Hence, microdermabrasion is effective only when it is combined with other treatment options.
Surgical removal of stretch marks is also common through which skin below the surface of effected zones like belly and thighs are removed, where there are chances of stretch marks appearing frequently. This is a permanent procedure of stretch marks removal though it might be a bit expensive. In addition to these, other popular remedies include chemical peels and microsurgery, all of which are known to be quite effective in the stretch marks treatment.
